Should LEED merge with the Living Building Challenge Rating System
So few projects pursue the Living Building Challenge certification system -- yet it is essential that more buildings be constructed to this standard.
Should the more recognized and widely used LEED rating system be merged with the Living Building Challenge system to produce a hybrid system that offers an intermediary and hopefully more popular step between LEED and the more rigorous Living Building Challenge?
I don't know how much of it is true, but one story I heard was that at one point the Living Building Challenge concept was proposed to or by people within USGBC, as a new LEED standard with a working title of "LEED Living".
There's some aspect of a possible partnership with USGBC mentioned here.
Again, what I heard was that USGBC was concerned about replacing "Platinum" as the highest level LEED rating and, perhaps because of politics related to all the investments in that being the highest level of LEED, the "LEED Living" concept didn't get traction.
As a result, the people who proposed it who wanted to make it happen left or got together and organized and created the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) and Living Building Challenge.
I can't actually find anything specifically written about "LEED Living" as a concept... so I am not sure if this is just urban lore.
