LEED Credential Maintenance

The LEED Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) requires LEED Green Associate and LEED AP with Specialty credential holders to complete CE hours every two (2) years through continuing education activities.

This page describes how Poplar members can easily maintain their LEED professional credentials, whether they hold a LEED Green Associate or LEED AP with Specialty credential.

Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) oversees the Credential Maintenance Program for LEED professionals. GBCI is an indepedent, third party global certification and credentialing body related to the green building industry. Below you'll find the most productive and efficient approaches for maintaining your LEED credential, as well as what you need to know regarding timing and requirements for your credential.

2 Year Reporting Period

LEED credentials are maintained on a 2 year cycle, or reporting period. LEED professionals have two years minus one day from the date the credential is earned to complete their required CE hours.

LEED Green Associate and LEED AP with Specialty

LEED Green Associates must complete 15 continuing education (CE) hours every two years. Three (3) of the 15 hours must be LEED-specific.

For LEED CMP, LEED APs must complete 30 continuing education (CE) hours every two years. All CE hours must be related to green building. Six of the 30 hours must be LEED-specific. The LEED-specific CE hours must relate directly to their specialty. LEED APs with more than one specialty must earn an additional six (6) LEED-specific CE hours for each additional specialty.

GBCI recommends using the major LEED certification credit categories as a guideline for determining the right green building topics for your credential maintenance needs.

Legacy LEED AP

If you earned your LEED AP credential before June 30, 2009, you are considered a legacy LEED AP, or a LEED AP without specialty. If you are a legacy LEED AP without a specialty, you are not required to maintain your credential. You will be a LEED AP indefinitely, unless you choose or chose to earn another LEED credential  or voluntarily enrolled in LEED CMP through GBCI. Either of these actions would require that you maintain your credential every two years.

** With LEED v4, the newest version of LEED, legacy LEED APs who work on LEED certification projects will no longer qualify for an extra point under Innovation in Design. Additionally, legacy LEED APs will be removed from GBCI’s professional directory.

LEED Specific CE Hours

LEED Green Associate

For LEED Green Associates, any course material that is relevant to green building is deemed LEED specific, as long as it has an explicit connection to the processes, procedures or concepts (i.e. intents, requirements and strategies) that are found in any of the LEED rating systems.

For LEED AP with Specialty, LEED specific hours must relate to their specialty. LEED specific tasks include completing a LEED update, completing an in-depth LEED project case study, completing a review of successful or unsuccessful implementations of LEED, or an analysis of the benefits of LEED.

The most effective way to earn LEED Specific CE hours is to complete LEED credits by working on a project that is registered for LEED certification.

Types of LEED CE Hours

GBCI has specified 4 types of Continuing Education activities that can count toward a LEED professional’s CE hours:

Continuing education has been carefully adapted to the daily lives of LEED Professionals. Earn hours through these activities related to green building.

1. Education (unlimited): Education should be relevant to green building and in the form of preferred courses and presentations from registered providers, self-reported courses and presentations, college and University courses, and Greenbuild International Conference and Expo. LEED-specific credit is given when indicated to GBCI-approved education, which is found in the USGBC course catalog.. Both participants and instructors receive 1 CE hour per hour of education, and those who develop content receive 2 CE hours per course.

2. LEED Project Participation (unlimited): Work on a project registered for LEED certification will count for 1 CE hour per credit. Project administrators can claim an additional 2 CE hours per project. All hours from Project Participation are LEED-specific.

3. Authorship (unlimited): Authorship is a credited contribution to a print or digital publication and is worth 3 CE hours for published article and 10 CE hours for published book. LEED specificity is determined on a case by case basis.

4. Volunteering (no more than 50% of total CE hours): Volunteering includes participation on the USGBC or GBCI Board of Directors, steering committees, or working groups; LEED credential exam item writing; local USGBC chapter boards and committees; or other volunteer organizations that support the LEED system. (Acceptable activities include attending meetings, planning events, performing research and engaging in governance, among others.) Volunteers can claim 1 hour per hour of participation. LEED-specific hours are designated for volunteering that is directly related to LEED.

1) Education

Attending or leading courses from registered providers, self-reported courses and presentations, Greenbuild, and college and university courses. Courses are only LEED-specific if they are reviewed by GBCI and from a registered provider.

1 CE hour per hour of education
Instructors: 2 CE hours for time spent developing content
Continuing Education Hour Limit:
No limit on hours earned, though the same instructional program can only be counted once.

As the saying goes, the best way to learn is to teach. The same goes for writing about a topic you are interested in.
By publishing articles or books that are related to the relevant CMP categories in LEED, you can not only earn an unlimited number of continuing education units, but also you can promote your expertise among members of the Poplar Network community and the people who are just learning about green building.   Authorship is a great way to maintain a LEED credential for free.

Specifying high-recycled content materials reduces the demand on raw materials while at the same time reducing the waste stream. On LEED projects, specifying recycled content materials is the easy part; tracking and documenting the pre and post consumer recycled content of each product can be a challenge. Reducing lighting power is often a cost-effective path to saving energy. LEED for Commercial Interior projects are required to reduce lighting power as part of the Prerequisite Minimum Energy Performance. A healthy indoor environment is an important component to a green workspace and has been shown to increase employee productivity. Natural daylight, in particular, has been shown to have a positive correlation on employee well being and satisfaction in the workplace. As part of our project team, you will be responsible for calculating the percentage of day-lit space for part of our project. Using window area, floor area and visible light transmittance, you will be able to perform the daylight calculation to determine if our conference room meets the credit requirements. You will also be utilizing a Credit Interpretation Ruling to re-run the calculation using additional information.

How to Report Your Continuing Education Hours

LEED professionals must self-report their continuing education hours to GBCI.

These steps apply to all activity types except for authorship. See instructions for submitting authorship hours below.

This will bring you to a “Report CMP Activity” page, where you are prompted to fill out the following:

To redeem your continuing education hours for writing an article or book that has been published, use the following instructions:

Go to the Authorship Form on GBCI’s website.

Fill out each of the fields. It is important to note:

Your GBCI Number: You can find this number by logging in to “My Credentials”.
Name of Submission: Use the title of the article.
Name of Publication: Use Poplar Network
Upload Your Submission: When submitting the text of the article, make sure to use the text that has been published. We often edit some of the content for grammar, etc. before the article is published.
Link (if accessible on the web): Include the link to your article on Poplar Network page where it has been published.
What CMP category(ies) does the submission best fit? If none of the categories fit, select not applicable.

Renewing Your Credential

If it is one year or less before your reporting period and you have submitted all of your hours, you can choose to Renew Your Credential. You can log in to “My Credentials”, then click “Renew My Credential” on the main page. You pay $50 and agree to terms and conditions, and then your credential should be updated within 24 hours.

If your continuing education is going to be audited, you will receive notification from GBCI within 24-48 hours.
