Lighting Power Reduction

Lighting power density is the Watts of lighting per square foot (psf) of room floor area (W/sf). By reducing lighting power density through better lighting design and more efficient fixtures, a project can save a great deal of energy. Lighting makes up 12% of electricity consumption in the U.S., making it an important component of energy efficient building. LEED aims to control energy use for lighting by requiring reduced lighting density.
Why this Credit is Important
Reducing lighting power is often a cost-effective path to saving energy. LEED for Commercial Interior projects are required to reduce lighting power as part of the Prerequisite Minimum Energy Performance. As part of our project team, you will be responsible for calculating the reduction in lighting power under the guidance of our LEED expert. We will provide you with all of the information needed including the number of design fixtures and wattage per fixture.
The baseline information can be found in the Reference Guide summary pages provided. The lighting designer or electrical engineer typically documents this credit, often at a high-cost to the project. By completing this credit, you will be helping save cost to our project while learning a valuable skill in the process.
