Typically the footprint you have for a solar system is limited and rarely do you "overproduce". In an ideal situation the utility would limit the amount you can generate. The long and the short of this is you would "disrupt" the grid balance. This is an ongoing problem in Hawaii now, the grid is have ing a difficult time dealing with all the power that the solar systems are generating. The grid is flooded during the day and is starved at night. This is a problem for the power companies. I have seen many what I consider to be unusually high interconnection fees but htis money goes to solving the above mentioned problems. It's a catch 22.
