Is it a requirement that bike racks be covered in residential but not in commercial developments in LEED?
Hi Jonny. For residential buidings (4 stories or higher) pursuing certification under LEED NC rating systems, requirement for bike racks is that they need to be secure, covered and in an accessible area (compliant with the 200 yards required by the credit). For commercial developments they don't need to be located under cover. I am not sure about the reason of this special requirement but may be it has some relation with the time bicycles stand in their respective storage area or racks.
When yo calculate you facilities quantity, keep on mind that residential units also receive visitors. Eventhough it is not specified in the Reference Guide, you can asume that you will have peak (bikes) and average (water flush and flow fixtures) transients and this number must be consistent for all credits.
Good luck!
