LEED SSc3 Brownfield Redevelopment

According to LEED, a brownfield can be defined by the following: 1) ASTM E-1903-97 Phase II Environmental Site Assessment, 2) a local or voluntary cleanup program or 3) a local, state, or federal agency... does anyone know WHICH local state or federal agency is responsible for determining this? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Hi Katie, thanks for your question. The EPA is the federal agency that defines brownfields and also develops systems for operating local voluntary cleanup programs in cases where the resources are available to clean up a brownfield. The EPA defines a "brownfield" as: "real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant." I think that most local and state agencies that are created to address the existence of brownfields look to the EPA for guidance on how to address them.

Hi Katie - to piggy-back off of Rob's example, Florida has the FDEP which helps identify Browfield sites. You can go on the EPA website and search under "Brownfields and Land Utilization" to find out more information relevant to your location.
