Q: Which of the following are included in the calculations for Development Density?
a) Highways
b) Lakes
c) sidewalks
d) parking lots
My answer: c; correct answer: d. As per LEED NC: Sustainable Sites Credit 2 Development Density and Community Connectivity, Density calcuations are based on a typical two-story downtown development and must include the area of the project being built. Are parking lots (and not sidewalks) covered under "area of the project being built" ? Thanks for the help!

If you refer to the LEED Reference Guide for Green Building Design and Construction 2009 Edition, in Sustainable Sites Credit 2, you will see there is a section entitled "Calculations." The section states, "Calculate the development density for the project by dividing the total square footage of the building by the total site area in acres. The development density must be 60,000 square feet or more per acre."
Development Density (sf/acre)=(Gross Building Area)/(Site Area)
Because sidewalks are public property and do not fall under the category of "Gross Building Area" or "Site Area" they are not included in the calculations for Development Density. Parking lots, however, are part of the "Site Area" and are therefore included in the caluclations for Development Density.
