For many, the words “beautiful” and “compost” may not jive. But with technology being what it is and an unprecedented number of us choosing green alternatives in favor of those that are less expensive or even more convenient, the two words can now live in harmony!

Know someone who doesn’t have garden space, but still wants to show the earth some serious love? Or perhaps you’re just tired of trekking outside everyday during the Arctic chill. Regardless, here are five lovely (or handsome) compost pails that will spruce up any kitchen:

  • Brushed Stainless Steel from Gardener’s Supply Co: Sleek, simple and modern, this dishwasher safe pail won’t take in odors. No interior bags needed and the graduated opening makes it a cinch to dump!
  • RSVP Square Bamboo from Garden Tones: This 4.5-quart bamboo pail features light tones that inspire a natural, earthy feel. The charcoal filter lid keeps smells out and the size is ample enough for at least a few days worth of compost. Requires liners and must be handwashed, but the product itself is made from biodegradable material.
  • Glazed Compost Crock from Plow & Hearth: Well-built and wonderfully attractive, no one will ever guess that this little addition to your kitchen is hiding a dirty secret inside! Just remember that the contoured shape means you need to pull out the liner before it’s chocked full.
  • Made to Order Hand Thrown Crock from MinerRevolutions: Colorado artisans Javan and Emily deliver a unique, glazed compost pail that will add character to any kitchen. Dishwasher safe, it features a braided leather handle and charcoal filter lid - and all at a reasonable price!
  • Kitchen Compost Bucket from Williams-Sonoma: Add some vintage flair to your environmentally conscious kitchen with this steel 1-gallon bin. The interior handled bucket makes transfers a snap and the airtight lid helps keep odors to a minimum.

This Christmas, consider going even more green than usual with one of these trendy compost buckets. While, admittedly, interior composting is not a concept for everyone’s taste, these options do make it much more attractive to all!
