Green and Sustainable Risks and Opportunities evaluates the risks and opportunities related to green buildings and sustainable operations. You will learn how green features and sustainability programs can reduce risk, as well as learn to identify specific ways in which green features and sustainable business practices result in increased risk and tested risk management techniques to address them and manage this new risk.

In this course you will explore the results of building to green standards, regulatory risks, market risks of foregoing green construction, financial incentives and uncertainty, greenwashing risks, leasing risks, management liability risks, legal risks and more. You will also discuss a framework for physical and operational risks of green building and how it can support the creation of effective plans to both manage risk and maximize sustainable benefits.
Review the risk related characteristics of green buildings and sustainable operations. Evaluate how green features and sustainability programs can reduce risk. Identify specific ways in which green features and sustainable business practices result in improved risk management techniques.

About your instructor:
Stephen Bushnell is a highly experienced insurance and risk management professional with more than 40 years of underwriting, marketing, product development, management and leadership experience with various property & casualty insurers – most recently as Senior Director for Commercial Insurance and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company (part of the Allianz Group). Steve is widely recognized as a risk-focused expert on green buildings, sustainable manufacturing and operations, and the broader business, economic and risk management implications of climate, energy and other sustainability challenges. In his 10 years with Fireman’s Fund, Steve led the development of the industry’s first dedicated insurance policies and risk services for green buildings (introduced in 2006), followed by similar solutions for manufacturing and other industry segments. Steve worked closely with Allianz to support the introduction of related offerings in its other key global markets.
He has served in advisory or board capacities for organizations like California Sustainability Alliance, the Green California Summit, UL Environment and The U.S. Green Building Council – where he was the first representative of the insurance industry elected to USGBC’s National Board of Directors from 2012-2014. Steve will serve a second term on the USGBC National Board through 2017. Steve has also contributed extensively to sustainability-related industry research and standard development, and has been cited as an expert in both trade journals and local and national media. He has delivered more than 100 presentations to audiences ranging from insurance regulators and other policymakers to environmental NGOs, and has been invited to speak at various industry conferences like GreenBuild and other forums hosted for real estate professionals by organizations like the Urban Land Institute and BOMA. Steve holds dual professional designations from the American Institute For Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters as an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), completed a Master of Business Administration in Sustainability from the San Francisco Institute of Architecture, and graduated from Northern Illinois University.
