Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are critical to buildng operations, but they can also represent the most significant use of energy in the built environment.

HVAC systems typically make up about 40% of a building’s energy use. As such, energy efficient HVAC systems are essential to green building development and operations, because such systems have the potential to not only reduce carbon production, but also save a lot of money over time.  This course is designed for current and/or aspiring green building professionals who want to learn the basics of high-performance HVAC and how to make conventional HVAC systems more energy efficient.

This course will describe how HVAC systems work and their importance for energy efficiency in buildings.  It will analyze energy efficient HVAC systems, how to determine their efficiency, and their return on investment (ROI) through energy savings.  You will learn new terms, such as “COP”, “SEER” and “EER”, which will help you to determine the efficiency of HVAC systems.

The course will evaluate various energy efficient HVAC systems, as well as factors to consider when designing and choosing a system.  Factors may include the function and needs of the building, the system size, and the resources needed to install and maintain the system.  Design factors that influence HVAC design include climate, hours of operation, internal heat gain, and temperature and humidity requirements.

“Energy Efficient HVAC” will also discuss how energy efficient HVAC technologies can help to achieve various credits in the LEED rating systems.  It also includes real world case studies, including the Dallas Veterans Administration Medical Facilitys’ thermal storage system and a sporting goods store in Quebec, Canada.

When you complete the course, you will take a short quiz to test your understanding of the material.  Then, you can submit this course as 1 LEED continuing education hour to GBCI.
